Our Story
Founded by Alberto Mendez, Gonzalo B., and Jerry Jimenez—Y Por Qué No Mezcal is proudly Oaxacan, through and through. We are not outsiders telling a story—we are Oaxaqueños, born of the same land that grows our agave. Our mezcal is a tribute to the rich heritage, deep-rooted traditions, and skilled craftsmanship of Oaxaca. At the heart of our process is a gifted maestra mezcalera, Angélica García Vázquez, a native of the region with generations of knowledge in her hands. Her dedication to ancestral techniques ensures every bottle captures the spirit and soul of our culture. From the wild agaves of San Baltazar Chichicapam to the first pour in your glass, every step is done by Oaxacan people—those who have lived mezcal since birth. Planting, harvesting, roasting, distilling, bottling, transporting, even importing—100% Oaxacan, every step of the way. This isn’t just what we do. It’s who we are. Angélica García Vázquez – The Soul of Our Spirit
At the very heart of Y Por Qué No Mezcal is Angélica García Vázquez, a second-generation maestra mezcalera whose knowledge, passion, and precision shape every drop we produce. Raised in San Baltazar Chichicapam, Oaxaca—a region revered for its agave and deep mezcal traditions—Angélica was born into the world of mezcal. From a young age, she worked alongside her father, absorbing the rhythms of the earth, the scent of roasting agave, and the sacred importance of doing things the right way, not the fast way.
Angélica honors her family's legacy by preserving the traditional techniques passed down through generations. She roasts agaves in underground earthen pits, extracts their essence using a stone tahona, ferments in open-air wooden vats, and distills with patience and precision in copper stills. No machines. No shortcuts. Just fire, stone, wood, copper—and the wisdom in her hands.
But Angélica is more than a mezcalera. She is a cultural guardian, a community leader, and a proud example of the vital role women play in mezcal’s story—especially in a world where that role has often gone unseen. Her work is not just a craft; it's an act of cultural preservation and personal pride.
